Character: Peter Gaudin Chadwick.

Abilities: Fluent in English and French. Access to international media and studies in the area have made him able to pick up from bits and pieces of other languages. He is nowhere near capable of holding a conversation in any of them, however, and has a much easier time understanding what he reads rather than what he hears. Other strengths include ambition, focus and integrity, which, despite looking very good on his resumé, are qualities that hold little to no relevance in physically trying and / or supernatural endeavors.

Flaws/weaknesses: Peter is only human! Philosophical implications aside, this makes him vulnerable to injury and disease, psychological influence and other supernatural shenanigans. In more abstract terms, while quite good at discussing facts and his opinions of them, Peter finds himself having a little more trouble openly expressing his feelings, or revealing much of anything about himself. While internally he's highly critical of his own faults, he prefers to correct other people than have to explain or apologize for his own mistakes. In more physical terms, Peter's occasional restlessness takes a toll on the torture of his fingernails with his teeth, and, more often than not, he freezes in the face of danger.

History/background:

Born and raised in England, Peter was the first of Stanley Chadwick and Delphine Gaudin's two children. His father and mother met in their college years when she adventurously decided to move from France to get a degree, both of them young idealists with a passion for art. While Delphine became a successful photographer, Stanley ventured into illustration, both eventually settling for jobs closely related to the news media.

They married young, had their first son soon after that, and welcomed his younger sister Margie four years later. Having a slightly more active connection with his mother's side of the family took Peter and his sister to visit her hometown in France many times, and while he never got to live there, he did manage to familiarize himself with the culture and speak its language fluently.

His childhood was relatively normal, though perhaps a bit more culturally and intellectually adventurous than in most conventional families. Peter's family was never wealthy; while the taste for art was fostered in the siblings, strong ideals and creative solutions for financial and social obstacles also made him very grounded and determined to fight for his own success.

Peter and Margie were seven and three years old respectively when Stanley and Delphine realized their young love no longer had a place in their relationship. After an untroubled divorce, Stanley was given full custody of their children while Delphine decided to move back to France, returning only for business trips, and receiving both Peter and Margie on every other special occasion. The reasons for her departure were never really discussed in-depth with either parent, but a routine was eventually reestablished within the new family dynamic.

A bright and active childhood gave way to a slightly more isolated stage when Peter frequented high school. Not that he had trouble making friends; he simply found that his interests and personality would often just not fit with his colleagues', and had little patience to go out of his way to really adjust himself to their own. He did maintain at least one very strong friendship with a girl called Paula Brassey, who was perceptive enough to figure out more about Peter during their friendship than he ever intentionally let on. While he wasn't particularly stellar up until college - neither socially nor with his grades - Peter's personality had a place to fully develop and shine through during his years in university. He was set on his goals pretty easily, and graduated from school to study Media and Journalism.

Among other things, Peter had his first serious relationship (and heartbreak) during this time: Edward Collins, a classmate from the first year, charming and charismatic and full of connections, he seemed promising until he just turned out to be too uncaring and egotistic for Peter's taste. His first lasting group of friends (and drama) was also formed at this stage, having made the strongest bond with Kathy Stewart, an attractive young woman, just as ambitious and focused as Peter was. She also had had more relationship troubles by the time they finished their degree than he'd accumulate throughout his entire life, but that was never detrimental to their friendship.

Shortly before graduating he met the young man that would come to be Big Deal Relationship #2: Hugh Scarpa. He was practically the opposite of Edward - romantic, kind and very attentive. If at first this had make seem him the ideal boyfriend, however, Peter eventually found that he wasn't nearly as invested in their relationship as Hugh was, and came to see him as little more than a needy nuisance and let him go.

College helped Peter ground his dream of working on the radio. Upon graduating he arranged the means to become independent - mostly thanks to the help of mother's family - and never looked back. Getting to work right away was easy, but his dream of becoming a host to his own show required a little more effort. Now, at twenty-four years of age, he can only say he's been successfully building a resumé in related areas, namely in journalism. He currently writes articles for a local newspaper and collaborates with some online publications, now residing in London.

Personality:

His parents' close relation to the news media definitely influenced Peter's aspirations growing up. His father, Stanley, was always a hard worker who invested as much as he could in his children's education, despite their struggle. He passed on that same drive to earn every accomplishment to his son, and that same drive sometimes makes it easy to create or feel tension between Peter and people with wealthier, easier backgrounds.

While his father has been significantly helpful with his goals - which he's thankful about - this had also made him somewhat resentful of his inability to do everything on his own. Easily frustrated when he's powerless, Peter's inherent perfectionism makes him direct a lot of his own criticism towards himself, which doesn't make him any less quick to judge the outside world. If there's a flaw, he'll make a note of it.

Making no secret about how proud and focused he is, he can undoubtedly still be a selfless friend, once his trust is earned. He views himself as a sarcastic, witty and charming person with a side of impatience and cynicism, forgetting to add that he can still be well-mannered, good-humored and helpful. Peter may seem like a rational, levelheaded adult at times, but his bigger flaws revolve around being insecure, passive-aggressive, nosy, blunt, and a bit neurotic in general.

Peter likes a good dose of facetiousness, but really isn't a big fan of nonsense. Expect no less than friendliness as his default stance; just don't expect him to be too open-minded if you're a total weirdo. Being needlessly rude isn't a part of him, with or without the bizarre factoring into the conversation, though he tends to get a bit snappish and speak before he thinks at times. Blunt at his best, passive-aggressive at his worst, Peter is sometimes not entirely aware of how he comes off; other times he's completely deliberate and unapologetic about it.

He seems to grow more confident when the other person shows a little more bashfulness, and a little less so when they become overbearing. He can be playful and enjoy provocations, but only shows that side when there's a certain level of familiarity. Displaying some charm helps him ease into things when he feels he might otherwise come off too strong or eager. He hates neediness, hates people who are too loud, and dreads the thought that he might at times come off that way.

Relationships play a significant part of Peter's life and personality; he often has the troubling tendency to look for love where it doesn't want to be found, setting himself up for an easy heartbreak in the process. While he isn't exactly in the closet, Peter doesn't go out of his way to make his preference for men too widely known, either - he values his privacy.

With a healthy amount of initiative, not a lot can stop him from getting what he wants, obvious moral obstacles still on the list. On the other hand, emotionally investing himself too heavily makes him feel either apprehensive or thrilled, depending on whether the situation feels too good to be true. There have been many times when this problem boiled down to acting before he thinks, facing the emotional consequences afterwards.

Background setting: The Soap Box is a collaborative musebox-slash-universe virtually identical to our own, where characters and events are played to resemble soap opera tropes, usually in stories and interactions that tilt toward both comedy rather than drama. The geography, world events and pop culture are essentially the same, but I have no intention of breaking the fourth wall with any of the game's existing fandom characters or played-by choices. The description is as follows (disclaimer: it's really not meant to be taken seriously. At all):

IN THE HEART OF LONDON, city sparks with life -- and life sparks with passion, sex, money and intrigue. It takes only one to rattle the chains of fate to change the fortune of others, so when more than one individual tempts destiny to take a new path, the sparks of life will ignite a fire of dilemmas and heartaches. Just how far are they willing to go to find happiness? (originally written by [personal profile] pizzaboy)
(NOTE: Peter's canon point in this application is set eight years prior to its current storyline, however, which would make him hail from the year 2004!)

Physical description:

James Marsden as seen in the movie Heights. Twenty-four years old, brown hair and blue eyes, sharp features and average build. Stands 1.71m ( 5'7" ) tall. The attention he pays to his appearance and presentation is evident, if modest.

Sample RP:

He stared at the piece of paper for another moment, flicking it around his fingers, pressing his thumb against worn out corners. Its once stark white color was now dirty and dull, barely contrasting against a number scribbled in muted red. The color hadn't been a choice, just the result of a lack of any other available pens in a rushed moment, lost in the crowd of people waiting for their turn to be heard by the barman, loud requests drowned out by the beat of mechanic and forgettable music. That night had ended four months ago. He'd known the man who had offered the piece of paper for the same amount of time.

There were encounters after the first, fateful call - dates, if he ever particularly cared about using the word - and the vague beginnings of an unofficial relationship between them. For someone apparently doomed to look for love where it didn't want to be found, Peter was content enough with the simplicity of being with this person. Apparently he was looking for something more, though, and questioning Peter's willingness to catch up.

An ultimatum left him alone with his thoughts in his apartment that afternoon, elbow on his desk, mouth resting against his knuckle. No particular torment pressed his brows or pursed his lips; there was uncertainty, yes, but he was attempting to clear it up with introspection, trying to figure out how it was that he felt and how he could ever explain it to someone else. Never mind that his job - currently still far from his dream career of working in the radio - was to be articulate. He was quite good at it when he had to deal with facts, when he had to grab and transmit concrete information that could be confirmed or dismissed. At that moment he realized, somewhat surprised by how long the conclusion had taken him, that it turned out he was just better at speaking his mind when what he had to say concerned other people's business. It was just easier to leave it that way, wasn't it.

It might have been no secret that this ease bled into other, less professional aspects of his life, given to more speculation. Listening to what others had to say about themselves and each other was no trouble; when the questions were directed at him, however, answers were kept vague, and redirected to reflect his take on what others had said and done.

Well, now it was time to talk about what he wanted to do. Phone collected into his hand, Peter found that same number registered on his contact list, and waited until a voice on the other side answered to do just that.

Sample post:

[ Good evening, Poly. Your friend here already had the chance to arrive (land) in your realm and indulge in a proper freak-out about his altered existence, so you get only a slightly milder version of the standard ignorant's introduction to the network. He speaks with an English accent, no other particular characteristic to it, but his voice does feel pleasant - the kind you'd expect to hear on the radio. ]

I don't understand how I got here - why I'm here. Why any of us are here, for that matter. You don't just - wake up in a completely different location for no reason. I'd like to believe it's a dream, but - [ He exhales, audibly frustrated, ] Obviously it's not.

[ It's... easy to tell that he's got a lot more he'd like to get off his chest, but suddenly doesn't know what to do with it. Instead he moves on to a more immediate topic. ]

What in the world am I supposed to do now?
